Numbness is the classic symptom of siatica.

Pain and numbness I understand but am worried about the wobbliness. Afraid to leave my house and am finding myself holding onto things when walking around.

There's an easy way to cure this. I used to get sciatica sometimes as well, I then tried this Tennis Shoe Technique every time it flared up and it was gone in 5 minutes:

I'm straddling a running shoe right now.

I had same symptoms for a while. x-ray of my spine shows degenerative changes on L4 & L5. tried orthotic insoles, seen chiropractor with no relief.
I bought Inversion table and since the first time I used feel a sudden relief and the symptoms never came back. I only used once in a while now if feeling tensions on my back.
There's another way to mimic effects of inversion from what I learned at CBI Physiotherapy, although it's not full inversion.

You can lie flat on the floor before an open door threshold. Push yourself through the doorway, but one leg will climb vertically up the door frame. Pull your body towards the frame as much as possible to get that leg straight up to rest vertically along the frame or wall adjacent to the door frame.

It also serves as a muscle stretch.

Yes, my left hip hurts. I have been walking unevenly for about two months but there was no pain until now. But even my friends have noticed a slight limp. I feel like one leg is longer than the other. This happened to my right hip two years ago but the pain was not nearly as bad. A doctor fixed me and I'd go back to him but he's not in Toronto.

I also woke up this morning with a charley horse. My leg also feels wobbly making me a bit afraid to walk around. It doesn't feel sturdy, almost like I'm going to fall. (I keep leaning to the left). Not sure if that's normal. Afraid to have a shower or bath unless someone is with me. Any volunteers? LOL
Chloe, I've had all this happen numerous times. See my post above. I can PM you my guy's contact info if you want it. Just suffering through a weekend of this with no relief (waiting for his office to open) has almost driven me insane at times, can't imagine enduring it for days or weeks. It's not an instant cure, I usually need to go three times, but you should notice gradual improvement each time.

So now I am in EXTREME pain and cannot walk at all. I'm basically immobile and the only time I am somewhat comfortable is when lying flat on my back. My doctor said yesterday that it was likely Sciatica and that it should clear up on it's own. But now I'm thinking about going back and getting some muscle relaxants. Should that help?

Is it normal to get numbness? Last night I had numbness in my left leg and actually thought I was having a stroke. Could numbness be a sign of a pinched nerve? Sorry for all the questions guys, I'm just really concerned.

I collapsed once years ago from back pain. I was so scared. Called my mom, who is experienced with back pain. She told me to not panic. Went to the hospital. They just gave me muscle relaxants but did fuck all.

Then I went to my family doctor. I was diagnosed with a degenerative disc. I had mild sciatica.

My doctor recommended I go see CBI Physiotherapy, not a chiropractor, although some people swear by chiropractors, so I won't rule them out.

CBI helped me a lot by having me do core exercises and stretches.

When I get too lazy, my back acts up again (like these past two days). So I have to do the regimen of stretches and core exercises.

Chloe, you need to get an exercise ball. There are a host of exercises to strengthen your core.

Even power walking will help, but you need to focus on controlling your pain right now. Muscle relaxants will help.

Believe it or not, core exercises will alleviate pain because they strengthen the muscles that support your spine (like Titalian was saying about your spine being like a suspension bridge).

Yes, I have an old exercise ball but probably need a new one. The funny thing is that it occurred when I was doing stretches to prevent this very type of thing! lol I've been doing some stretching today. :)

I actually did that type of move in a Yoga class about a month ago. It felt great but not sure if I should get on the floor right now....

Thank you. Thanks guys! :)

Next time I see you, I'll show you all the stretches that help, as well as a core exercise (you can use an exercise ball or not) which is called the 'superman'. There's a harder one wherein you lie flat on the ground and pump up your buttocks off the ground (you're using stomach muscles to hoist yourself).

I have not read most of the posts and do not plan on it and accordingly me apologize in advance if I am repeating what someone else may have said. Assuming that there is nothing physiological or neurotically which might require surgical intervention have you considered acupuncture. i had back issues a number of years ago and although i went in being very skeptical it really helped me.

I think acupuncture might be the way to go.... Due to some numbness and funny feelings in my left foot, I was tested by a neurologist about a month ago and he said things looked okay.

Worst that will happen is that you waste an hour. I got a lot of relief. And as I say I was very skeptical.

I managed to walk to the store last night (it took a while) and the woman asked if I broke my leg. Then I almost fell on the way home stepping off a curb. :( Is it normal for my foot to keep going on it's side (inwards)? Can't find anything online about it.

Did anyone else find that the pain got worse? I am in even more pain today. It feels like my hip is broken.

At this point you may want to consider a trip to the hospital if you becoming a danger to yourself. Seriously.

Googling symptoms is not a good idea. You obviously need some sort of treatment and relief. Call a cab and go. Don't wait. you won't make it better by waiting and hoping.

Just do it. It sure as hell can't hurt!

I know - just hate hospitals. :( A friend is coming over later this morning to drive me to the hospital.

In post 1 of this thread,i stated how it felt like I needed a new hip.

A couple posters said there was way more at play than sciatica.

Hip is fine now.

Odds are you have sciatica, but getting it checked out is a good idea.

So JTK, did you get any treatment or just let it resolve on its own?
I walked and walked and walked.
It was the only thing that helped. It was agony as I set out on my walk, but after about 30 minutes it felt more tolerable and by an hour I could say it was better. Every day I would repeat.

Numbness is the classic symptom of sciatica..

For those who had numbness, how long did it last? My left foot is still quite numb and it's affecting my ability to walk properly. Starting to think there is something else going on but am finding doctors are useless. Looking into TCM....

years ago....I herniated the L4..L5...it happened in November...and I didn't get it taken care of until the following April...during that time my left leg went numb..and the circumference of my thigh lost 1 full inch...from the limping and then dragging of it.
If I were you...and back in the day I was....Get this looked after ASAP
I'm in my mid 50's and still have issues with my back

Thank you. :) I have been to my family doctor, a neurologist, a physiotherapist who worked on my sciatic nerve (I liked it when he was punching my bum, hehe), and saw two different doctors at the hospital. One initial hospital visit and then another a week later when I fell on my tailbone. :( I have also been limping and feel like I'm dragging my foot when I walk. My foot feels heavy and numb. The neurologist asked if I had dropped something heavy on my foot.

Interestingly, the physiotherapist said that he did not believe I had a herniated disk because, if I did, I would not have been able to do the exercises we were doing and wouldn't be so flexible. ;)

The numbness in the left foot.

It persists frankly. Ever so slightly. On a scale of 0 to 10, it would be about a 1, or a 2. Not an issue, but I am aware of it.

My back still gives me trouble. The sciatica hasn't been back (knock on wood).

Truth is, it would help if I lost about 40 pounds. I'm 6-3 and about 225#. I don't have a big belly, just thick all round. 40 pounds would take a lot of stress off the spine.
