The numbness in the left foot.

It persists frankly. Ever so slightly. On a scale of 0 to 10, it would be about a 1, or a 2. Not an issue, but I am aware of it.

My back still gives me trouble. The sciatica hasn't been back (knock on wood).

Truth is, it would help if I lost about 40 pounds. I'm 6-3 and about 225#. I don't have a big belly, just thick all round. 40 pounds would take a lot of stress off the spine.
My understanding from my own bouts with sciatica is that each case is different. The disc impinges on the nerve differently with each person and the degree of recovery also differs. Sounds like you still have slight contact with the disc and nerve.

Thank you. :) The numbness in my foot is probably a 7 or 8. Some days are worse than others but I have days where I can hardly feel my foot at all and it affects my walking. I don't have a weight problem - I'm pretty thin at 5'1 and 103 lbs. No diabetes - thought I had it but it was recently confirmed that I don't.

The neurologist asked if I had dropped anything heavy on my foot. My black lab steps on my foot frequently so now I have to always wear shoes in the house. she can't help it - she walks a bit sideways due to a spinal stroke. I have days where I wonder if I haven't had one too. I bet we look funny walking down the street together. Me leaning to the left and her leaning to the right.

leg/foot extensions. hard to write it but while sitting on a chair sitting up right, extend the affected leg to a90 degree angle, then extend the foot and the toes upward (so sort of like a full stretch). doing this periodically through the day relieves nerve tension and reduces flare ups.

also best thing to do is see a good physical therapist. they will customized stretches for u which will help u beat this. it is beatable, dont succumb to the pain!!

(was 50 pounds overweight and had S1-L5 Herniated disc + sciatica and pain free for almost 2 years now)

For quick relief grab a regular tennis ball, lay flat on the floor and bring your knees up while your feet are still on the floor. Put the ball on your sciatic and roll very slowly and then lay still with ball for 30 seconds and then continue. The weight of your body on the ball which is now on your sciatic will release pressure 20 mins should do it. Believe it or not it works. When I do it I can feel it going right down into my knees and toes. It's amazing

^^ Yes, but not nearly as often as other women. I was wearing flip-flops all summer which may have been a problem.

CC, this is a good test for sciatic problems. Lay flat on your back close to a wall. Put your left foot on the wall knee bent and then cross your right leg over the left leg. Hold this position for at least 60 seconds, repeat procedure using opposite leg. If you find this provides relief it generally indicates a problem with the sciatic nerve. If it does provide relief do this stretch every morning. Ok the Doctor's office is now closed. GB

Thank you. :) The sciatic pain has been gone for a little while - my hip feels almost back to normal. The problem now seems to be just my foot - my knee occasionally hurts a bit but I think that's because of the way I've been walking.

For those who had numbness, how long did it last? My left foot is still quite numb and it's affecting my ability to walk properly. Starting to think there is something else going on but am finding doctors are useless. Looking into TCM....
Missy you need to get proactive before your back problems become degenerative. Acupuncture and aqua therapy is a good way to start, then you'll have to deal with your core issues directly.

I used to have chronic back problems, so I got myself a personal trainer. He told me that my core was disproportionate, my abdominal muscles where strong but my back muscles were shit. He had me do two reverse crunches in particular.

The second one he had me do was very intense and unlike this video I had to do it on a horizontal Roman chair. I was in excruciating pain for a week but I could move freely. After the first week the pain dissipated and I haven't had back problems since.

Here's another exercise he had me do, more for the side muscles that support the back.

Maybe you have weak bones? Some people take calcium supplements in a bid to strengthen their bones but recent studies seem to indicate that they do little to help but may cause other problems like hurting your heart. (BTW: I know some people 10-15 years older than you who have had knee or hip replacements.)

1.stand straight with your hands on your hips.
move affected leg back 2-3 feet
lean back, repeat several times

2. sit down or lean against the wall
grab affected leg just below knee
bring up to chest, repeat

I was taught these by my physio-therapist

Lots of decent video's on Youtube....found a few years ago and helped me quite a bit.

Here's one I found before and found again just now to share with this thread:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UoITjubrgE

The last stretch in this video from a seating position I routinely do now 4-5 times a day even when I have no sciatica, on both legs, almost like preventive effort I suppose. I find now only if I sit for more than 8-10 hours total of the day cause any flare up and remind me to get stretching again.

This thread was from 5 years ago - hard to believe it's been that long! Brings back memories of when I dealt with Sciatica. I recall the numbness on my left side, especially my left foot, persisted for a few months.

I know you're trying to help, but this actually made it worse.
And so did some of the exercises on YT: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sciatica+exercises

I got some Epsom salt this morning so I'm gonna take a bath in that and see how it goes

Phil, go see a doctor. He might well be recommending surgery if it's so bad. Don't listen to people on TERB.
I will if it lasts more than 1 week.
It actually feels a little bit better today as opposed to yesterday, so I'm on the right track
