It doesn't have anything to do with which OS is superior - but that's not what makes buying a blackberry "stupid" - would you buy a betamax player in the 80s even though it was better than VHS, how about HD DVD vs Blue Ray? Ecosystems, support, scale matter - that's all. In that measure, outside of the GWN and a few developing countries Blackberry is irrelevant.

OTB
Nailed it.

And I'm not sure if Canada can be considered Blackberry Nation anymore. I rarely see them in public anymore.

Lack of Apps will bite you sooner or later. Just the other day in Starbucks I realized I left wallet at home. Luckily I had my Android phone which allowed me to download Starbucks app to link to my PayPal account to pay for the coffee. Not sure if BB has it.

Maybe there's an app to remind you to take your wallet when you leave your house. :D

After pondering this post for a while I'd say definitely DO NOT GET THE Z10. You'll be sorry. I'm a BlackBerry fan saying this. You'll be in info isolation. No banking apps. No forum reading apps. I'll bet any app u want for work or your hobbies won't be available on z10 but will be available in ios or Android. And the z10 browser really stinks at organizing bookmarks and favourites. I don't think BlackBerry will improve at this point cause they're working on trying to sell out or get broken up. They're done. A sinking hip. Titanic if u will. I'd stay away.

Like I said in my initial post, I'm not an apps guy. I use my smartphone primarily for email, text, notes, calendar, Facebook, weather and password keeper. I sometime even call people but that's about it. Oh yeah, I take pics and video sometimes but have a nice SLR if I want good quality. My current BB does pretty much everything I want it to do but want something bigger, newer and a bit faster. I don't need a banking or forum app as I do that on my desktop computer.

Besides, I'm eligible for a free upgrade on a Z10. Worst case scenario is I switch to an android or iPhone down the road. It's not a big deal to me.

I talked to a couple more people with Z10's on the weekend and they were quite happy with them.

GB27, if you haven't picked one up yet, you might want to wait a few weeks to check out the Z30.

Even bigger screen, better batt life and newer operating system.

It might not be a free upgrade though.

Yeah tagboy, just heard about that. But seriously, BlackBerry is fucked. On the same day they announce the Z30, which does sound better than the Z10...

There's reports of major layoffs. No surprise really.

www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/looming-layoffs-eclipse-launch-of-new-blackberry-smartphone/article14403800/

But at the end of the day, it's just a $200 phone. Who cares, I can always go buy a different one if BB implodes. The money for something like this means nothing to me.

Maybe I should wait for the Z50. :D

This is kinds cool, although there's so few people with BlackBerry's they had to do something. Nothing like feeling lonely when you only have one BBM contact. lol

In addition to the Z30, BlackBerry said Wednesday it will make BlackBerry Messenger – one of the company’s best-loved and previously exclusive features – available on phones powered by Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS operating systems starting this weekend.

I don't see any reference in that report to BB delaying the release of the Z30. In fact it's being released in the UK tomorrow.

I got the Z10 a few months back & love it... the Hub is great!... and there are banking apps

I recommend the Z10.. but am thinking of upgrading to the Z30
Are you on Facebook? If so, how well does the app work on the Z10? My buddy has an S4 and he says there's all sorts of bugs using FB on his phone.

I've grown tired of my current 5 year old BlackBerry. Now I've looked at all the options, iPhone, Android and the new BB Z10. I know lots of people who have each type and they all like them but the reason I'm thinking of the Z10 is partly due to familiarity and the other is it has a bunch of features I like.

I'm not an "Apps" guy so it doesn't matter that iPhone or Androids have more. I think I have 5 apps that I use and they're available on every platform. I like the the fact that you can replace the battery in case you're not near a power source, upgrade memory for cheap, it has a mini HDMI output and you can upgrade the memory for next to nothing. I also like the keypad which my friends who've got them rave about. Some have switched from iPhone and find it far superior. It also has a bit larger screen.

I'm not one for buying into the absolute latest technology so I think the Z10 might be just the phone for me. Besides, I hear if you do a backup of your old BB, it's a simple restore to the Z10 and all your info is in the right place.

Am I an idiot?

Here's a comparison:
Given that they just reported a loss of almost $1B due to inventory charges of said handset - yes, I think you might be better served with a more successful / surviving platform...

I'll take my chances with the Z30 as it has more useful features to me than the others. Anyway, it's just a phone and I can always switch to a different handset if things do go south. It's not like I'm investing a huge amount of stock in BlackBerry.

I'll go with the smartphone that makes the most sense to me. Sorry for not not jumping on the iOS/Android bandwagon but they just don't do it for me at the present time.
