There's some notable and vocal members who have not voted. (I did not vote because I do not live in Toronto.)
I don't either, but I voted yes because I figured it would drive Phil nuts and the discussion of what that might actually mean interests me. If the situation in Toronto really warrants it I don't know.

You're probably the only one who clued into the fact my poll was a trap :)

I'd like to take credit but not really. I just figured you thought the answer was so obvious that the results would show everyone knew it was ridiculous. I didn't think if it as a trap.

A week will be enough. Imagine all the looting and rioting that will ensue. People will be begging for the police to return.

I'm actually surprised that the "yes" vote isn't any higher because Toronto is an anti-police liberal centric city. I think there are still people who believe TPS threw a black woman off a balcony and Smollett was assaulted by two white men.

This is what some people fear. That the MPD will basically tell criminals that they won't arrest anyone as a way to push back.

Sort of like a more aggressive version of the NYPD slowdown a few years ago where they said they would do the bare minimum only. (That, if I recall, was accompanied by a drop in crime across the city.)

Once again, why do you think this means people want all law enforcement to stop?

and here we go...first phase has been initiated....

“ A city councillor has submitted a motion to defund the Toronto police budget.

Well, good luck.

I now understand that the Minne initiative is to hand control of the city police to a civilian body and "demilitarize" the cops. That doesn't seem such a bad idea at all. It certainly doesn't appear to be just having no cops in the city.

But clearly initiatives have to include better pay to attract better educated officers and different training.

Well there you go. Proof you are out of touch with public sentiment.

The TERB poll is not the "general public". Let's see how much support abolishing/reforming the police gets in the broader public. One city councillor has already expressed support for "fixing" TPS.

No. We need the police. They need to limit the power of their union and make suspend without paid and the firing easier. Their union ties up cases while the officer is suspended with pay. You keep hearing stories of police officers suspended from duties with full pay for years. This is paid vacation.

Let's see how much support councillor Joe Cressy gets in his effort to disband/reform TPS.

The forerunner to modern policing was community policing. It proved insufficient especially for large urban cities.

My brother inlaw's wife really wanted to be a police officer, submitted application, and was fortunate enough to go for a ride along for a day.
Turns out, after the ride along she withdrew her application. She said the officers were complete jerks to the general public and thought they were better than everyone. They all have type 'A' personalities, and thrive off of power. The worst part is she said the motto 'birds of a feather flock together' sticks there. In other words, the arrogant officers typically preferred to hire other arrogant officers like them, rather than more negotiable, reasonable officers that did not thrive on power.

She mentioned there was absolutely no racism she saw, but there was definitely a different attitude towards the lower income families. So we are essentially treated differently by officers according to our economic 'status' and where we may live.

The solution to this problem is to stop hiring police with power hungry personality traits, and to remove the power from officers. For example, having an officer testify in court is not really fair to a 'civilian' as the officer's word alone is hard to fight against. Video evidence via body cam will clear all of this up. It would also remove police from falsifying reports, which does happen in Canada (Simple thing as stating a guy tripped while ignoring the fact the officer pushed them).
