Why should this guy get away with it. Everybody else does it the proper way. He should have applied for the permits and go through the proper Chanel's to get the variance approved. If there are other houses in the area with bigger additions than his he would have gotten the permits. The guy shouldn't be above the law. He should pay the city's cost (lawyer) also as what he did is illegal and he knew it.
this shit doesn't surprise me the least as I have friends who live in areas with the same type of people from the same certain country living there and let me tell you, they think our system is a fucking joke. They don't care and even if the permit was $0.2 they wouldn't do it? I say good on the neighbors for snitching on them. The city should now be able to recoup the costs of their lawyers for fighting these pricks. And also what a joke about them complaining about "mental health issues"! Too fucking bad! Welcome to life! And as for their daughter, what a dipstick! They should post her name, picture and what law firm she works at to ensure NO ONE hires this dumb bimbo. here's a solution, make them turn the "addition" into a 24-hour Asian Incall with hot Japanese, Korean, Viet and Thai (the hottest azn gurls btw) girls aged 22-26 that offer BBBJ, CIM, shower with the client, etc for $50/hour and the "elderly couple" can mop up all the jizz and cook the clients chinese food free of charge until they pay off the 500K. Let them pay a fine plus the city's court costs and the cost for inspection and if the inspection say it's fine they can pay the permit fee as well as the fees for any variances that their neighbours want in the same standard.
Considering the house was bought by a lawyer, I have the feeling that they knew what they were doing and don't have too much sympathy.
well then they should have got the permits in the first place. they are not expensive. should we all be allowed to do whatever the fuck we want then just say oopsie not my fault later on.

I disagree; doing so will mean anyone and everyone (deep enough pockets) if they don't get the permit they want, will do whatever they want and in the end they'll just pay the permit fee (plus court costs). What about the aesthetic impact on the neighborhood?
I grew up and live in the area. I must have walked by that house at least a thousand times. I'm very familiar with the street. The house looks exactly like a dozen other houses on the block. I'd bet that there are other houses on that street or near vicinity that have had additions built without a permit. This area had a high concentration of Italians and Portuguese immigrants (construction workers, bricklayers, etc) back in the 70's. I'm sure a few of additions were built back then with a few friends/colleagues without all the paperwork/permits. I'm sure people bought houses that had additions built without a permit.
As for the influx of people from a certain area. It's not the ethnic background, it's their profession. Alot of lawyers, doctors and CBC staff move into the area, can you say ARROGANT?
