New min wage and tipping

Silly of them to expect it but there are entire groups in our society who would never think of tipping regardless of income levels

I mean fuck common sense
If I spent a million dollars in my life and do not tip 20% that means an extra $200,000 to spend
You can act all outraged but at end of the day I do better than you do

I am not convinced by that math at all.
Maybe if you tipped 20% you would feel like a mensch when waiters would smile at you and it would give you incentive to make 50% more money in your life. And you would be able to have a dinner out with a woman and not get dirty looks from the stuff. Women sure as hell notice when waiters appreciate the tips. Tipping well is actually is a pretty cheap way to score big points with a woman.

Generally being frugal when you MAKE money is reasonable and fine but being frugal when you SPEND money is usually just plain cheap. A smile of a waitress is a part of dining experience. You can cheap out on it, sure. Some people get food from food banks even though they can afford buying it. Others get food from the garbage behind restaurants. There are many ways to be frugal with your dining experience.

There used to be many restaurants (especially high end 4 and 5 star establishments) that use to add a 15% service charge to all bills.

Niagara Falls does this too
They started building the extra fee into bills

Some do that because they automatically think the guy is paying. I used to acknowledge them equally and then read the table. Lots of times she might be paying, especially business types. That's just lazy.

I'm not a "big spender". I tip the customary 15% because when you don't, it's like taking money out of a hard working person's pocket.

If everybody did what you did, these people would be making waaaaay less then minimum wage, and would probably have a serious effect on our economy.

Tipping to me is about subsidizing a business because it's owner fails to pay it's employees properly.
If you cannot afford to pay the operating costs of your business fully you should think twice about opening a business.
One should do their best in any job regardless of the remuneration.
They chose the job and a can easily choose another if they do not like the remuneration of the current job.
I really hate the snobby attitude of people who can afford to tip telling others not to eat out or behaving as though they are holier than thou because they tip.
Many people tip to avoid getting saliva and a lot of other things thrown into their food.
Servers openly talk about doing these things to the food of bad tippers on certain websites.
It should be a criminal charge for doing such things to people's foods because they did not choose to do something that's optional ie tip as you would have liked.

As you say "to me", but your absolutely wrong with this theory, not mention it's irrelevant.

The fact of the matter is they get paid less with the expectation they will get tipped because it's what your supposed to do in our culture. Tips aren't really supposed to be optional which is why they should put it in the bill.

In Australia there is no expectation of a tip when you go to a restaurant

IMHO tipping has gotten out of control, 20 percent is the new expectation, not for great
Service, just expected,. So much so it is the default on some bills

With the new min wage which DOES apply to waiters , I am going Australian!

I very rarely tip 20% only in exceptional circumstances. If service is relatively poor I only tip 10%, if it's adequate 15%, if it's good 18%. 90% of the time it's 15-18%. This is of the total including taxes.

Nothing racist in my post all. I have no problem with black people and as you can tell by my handle, I especially like the women.

All I'm doing is calling a spade a spade. No not all black people are cheap. Are many? Yes. I'm simply stating facts. You never posted that you are a black person, but I'm guessing you and spraggamuffin are. How am I coming to this conclusion? Because your both defending it's okay not to tip. Now lets see, are you? I had bunch of females friends in my 20's that worked as bartenders and waitress in strip clubs. They used to hate when black guys would come in because they would order a coke, nurse it for 2 hours and not even tip on the one coke. Again, this isn't being racist, this is stating facts. This is what would happen.

If your going to take the position it's okay not to tip servers, in a culture where it's expected to the point some of our labour laws are based around it, then be ready to get criticized for it, especially if your going to discuss it in a public forum.

I also said I think tipping is a disgrace and just silly vs paying wages and include in food price. And I am very while - not even sun tanned!

The no blacks at least in the U.S. has nothing to do with tipping but for most they tell me its because so many black guys have tried to talk them into them being her pimp. Or some of the lowlifes on BP say that because they already have a pimp and don't want someone else to try and get their gal (pimp writing the ads). Obviously anything racial is a very unfair generalization since many black guys are wonderful and many white guys are jerks.

As a server who worked every floor imaginable for 20 years I can say with certainty that Black people are the worst tippers period. I don't know why but they are.

We are talking 5% or less as a rule. Next worst were Chinese at pretty much 10% across the board but they are very easy to take care of, in and out quickly to turn the table as well.

Black people would be slow, difficult, demanding, condescending on top of it. Fortunately they are also too cheap to dine out much so tables of them were rare. And my hostesses liked me so they would steer them to other sections when possible.

Best tables ever were American business guys. One table of four could make my night.

And that's just an observation. I still served them to the best of my ability because occasionally they would surprise me(and I take pride in my work).

It is what it is. Could be cultural. Australians were the same. I would put it down to ignorance but if you are traveling regularly then you should pick up and defer to local customs.
