You own a U-Boat watch? Nice. Very nice. I've been looking at them and am contemplating purchasing one. Which one did you buy?

From Mr Black...... when i was a retailer in 80s 90s on Bloor i use to carry the clothing line ... they never did watches back then.... but now they rock... another nice one i just grabbed was a Bell Ross .... but i find it more intrusive on the eyes. .... from Mr Black at 24 Belair ..... he is pretty much the only show in town with truly different and impressive time pieces... Another greta place for watches and about 500 to 1000 off os MSRP is T3 at Peking Capital Airport

Rolex whenever i'm in Macau.
Hmm...are you sure?

Funny to know this since the first impression on Macao/Macau other than punting in the casinos is the real "punting" in those massage parlours, where for a third less than those in town you get MPAs providing both decent massage and high mileage like you may find at the incalls.

I suppose you would get even better deal (50% off or something) in Dongguan and Shenzhen but the Yuan/RMB is appreciating fast. You get more no pun intended "bang" for a strong loonie in Macau...

BTW, Robuchon á Galera is top notch compared to anything you can find in New York City, let alone in Toronto.

I am not convinced that a guy wearing a good suit and watch can get a better discount than a guy wearing jeans and no watch.
Any sale is based on client's ability to pay.
So I'd think as long as you don't smell so bad that you get kicked out of the store, a poor guy outfit should bring at least as good a result as a rich guy outfit.
I travel and work in mainly casual wear ....jeans etc ..... i am always noticed by the watch and accessories i wear and generally not by the clothes .... God is in the details..... anyone can have a nice suit ..... not many people play 4 or 5 grand on a watch or shoes or belts etc etc ....

so I am going to be buying a TAG in the next month or so. I have been looking at some that are 2-3K, just want a stainless steel watch with a clean face, day/date would be good. should I be shopping around alot or are the prices fairly standardized? what sort of room for negotiation is there at this price point?
With the TAGs watch out for grey market shops ... Costco being one of them .... u can get it for a few hundred less but not covered by warranty.... if u r truly able to afford a 2 or 3 thousand dollar time piece ... then do not bother with the grey market and get it from an authorized dealer... it is like buying a luxury car and bitching about putting premium gas in it .... if u cannot afford the gas u really could not afford the car

I went through a serious watch infatuation stage a few years and caught the bug! Was looking for something in the $1000 to $1500 range.

Since I couldn't afford the Rolex Milgaus or a Bell & Ross, this is what i ended up with: a Ball Fireman. Fantastic watch with a wonderful rich history. Hard to find in Canada, there's only one dealer. Sneek a peek at www.ballwatchusa.com

One of my watches is a Ball. I like to have a day of the week on my watches. It's also unbelievably bright in the dark.

If by Canadian dealer you meant the one in Vaughn Mills mall, they have just stopped carrying Balls, but do have some inventory left.
So whoever wants one, better hurry up.

you do make a point but do you know how many real knuckleheads ask if the watches I wear are knock offs and even after I say, 'no' they still don't believe it. I have one good knock off that I like and bought with eyes open. I keep it for historical reasons and it gave me some insight into the quality out there.

Another "hardcore" Patek Philippe "porn" for those who could afford to have a pocket watch....

BTW, that's the closet thing to have an orgasm identical to getting intimate to an attractive, popular SP or trophy type hottie.

I am in tears on a number of levels.

I think I will go and look at my fathers watch he got from my mom before he went overseas. Its engraving on the reverse is as crisp as it was on day 1 and he came back with it. It still works. It's priceless.

Thank you
Very interesting....

Maybe someday when my career is on track and I have spare cash after funding the commitments, I will get those luxury watches in pairs for my future wife and myself. The pairs would be handed down to my future son & daughter.

Nah....the chance of making it happen is slim as many Ladies do not buy this "old" idea. They prefer to get affordable, instant gratification and stimulation like owning an IPOD for or shopping for new shoes....

Just kidding...

For those who want to know the true cost of owning a watch for over $1000.....

Now having read that, I have my concerns about the calculations. Most of my collection watches have leather straps. The two most expensive ones have never had the strap replaced and one of the watches is almost 20 years old. The watch in the middle price range has one and in the 5 years I've own it, I've replaced the strap twice for a total cost of $25 (full wholesale value of the band). The second band, I got for free because I bitched. So this $200 dollars every year is more a function of her being a princess and won't wear something old. I also don't swim in/near the ocean with a leather strap watch. That's dumb. My Rolex has never had it's metal bracelet replaced but has had two links replace over the 35+ years, total $70+ wholesale. I have yet to pay $500 for any repair or periodic service. They pay it because they don't care squat about $500 and the service people know it.

We are fortunate to collect watches with leather straps in dry/not humid weather here. Those leather straps would probably not survive for a couple of decades in humid, tropical places thanks to moisture. The mold will take care the rest.

So this $200 dollars every year is more a function of her being a princess and won't wear something old.
Women do not need to act like princess just because she doesn't wear something old. She always find a way to be a Queen and demand the man to be on her knees/submissive.

Not suggesting I am chauvinistic by any means but I would NOT tolerate ladies act like this.

I also don't swim in/near the ocean with a leather strap watch. That's dumb.
Definitely for a leather strap watch but for metal bracelet watches many do swim with one as they want to "test" whether it's truly water proof to 100m or something. Funny to realize some forgot to screw down triplelock winding crown tightly and securely before dipping, allowing sea water to get into the movement and rust everything inside before it's too late.

The $500 quoted from the authorized service center includes everything from disassembling the watch for recalibration to polishing such as fixing hair thin scratches on the bracelet and bezel. You get $100 off if you choose polishing only which IMHO is BS.

Obviously, they recommend servicing once in every 3-5 years since that's the profit center. You may take their advice when you don't take care those watches like precious jewels and abuse your Rolex or Patek Philippe with scratches and dents everywhere, even damaged dial to boot. But then you need more than $500, possibly double to fix the "mess".

Simply put, don't volunteer to have your Rolex watch in good hands disassembled for servicing just because that's what Rolex recommend. Having said that, if I had one, I would not push the limit like some who wait until it stops working 20 years later. Instead I would probably have the servicing 10 years after I have one.

BTW, that $500 fee for repair is not a King's ransom since you need to stop visiting your favorite SP twice for an hour each time. ;)

Hinz;

i've got family who live in the Islands and nothing made of leather last too long. I've got a camera lens with widlife (Hydra-like) in it because I stayed to long down there. The techies I' ve shown it to laugh and smile a lot after the story; no I don't use the lens any more.

I know what you mean about some people not screwing the crown down. Not me. I only let the watches go 10 years max and get a full work up on them, but certainly not 3-5 years as they suggest. Who do they think they are, Green & Ross?

FYI, per annual, joint undercover investigative report by CTV's W5 and APA, Green & Ross is known to be top on the list when it comes to customer complaints and bait & switch tactics.

Only financial "advisers"/salespersons and car dealerships have identical low reputation.

I've yet to meet a woman who would not be thrilled with a shiney wristwatch adorned with sparkly diamonds.

Not for me as I would rather buy an "entry-level" expensive Ladies watch and use the difference from buying wristwatch adorned with diamonds as a down payment to buy a diamond ring and a pair of diamond earrings to match.

But again I am not wealthy and have too many commitment to fund right now.
