Thudarr, what does getting the job done mean to you?
Does it mean winning 15, 20, 30, 40 or more games this season or making the playoffs or winning a championship this year or next year?
My posting is not just to Thudarr but to others I have seen posting in here. I am more frustrated in some of the postings I see than I am by the play of the Raptors at times. This is an exciting team to watch but yes frustrating at times. A lot better team to watch than the past 3 seasons. Love watching the fire in Calderon. I hope this rubs off to Graham and a bit into Charlie V.
I cannot believe how many people have judged Babcock on one fricken pick. Unbelievable! And there are some reports that have said that Aurajo was one of their main choices before Babcock was even there so it was not totally his pick. Let's see. He picked 4 quality players in this year's draft and signed Pape Sow who they sent down to D-League to get lots of playing time. Pape is the second leading scorer, the top rebounder, the top shot blocker, most free throws made and attempted in the D-league. This is certainly not to say he is going to dominate in the NBA but he could be a decent contributor when he comes back to the Raps and matures a bit more. But it is to say Babcock seems to know a thing or two.
How many NBA teams have you seen that have 3 rookies playing significant minutes? Not to mention several other young players. And have a winning record or anywhere near a winning record. The closest may be the Chicago Bulls and they are not yet a championship caliber team. You would be hard pressed to find a team in the history of the league with a winning record with this many rookies and young players.
It is not like they are getting blown out by 20 points every game. They could have 3 or 4 more wins though the record still would not look that great it would be better in line with expectations.
Babcock came in to get the Raptors out of a mess. Giving him one season is not fair. Give him the rest of this season and a couple of more and then judge. Who you going to bring in? If you bring someone else most people will give that GM one or two games before criticizng him. People are so short-sighted.
There are those that say no veteren players want to play in Toronto because the Raps are not winners. Ok. Wow, great observation. Then people criticize Babcock for trading a sulking, negative, injury prone Carter and not getting an all-star back for him who likely after his contract was up would have bolted from Toronto. So what is the only thing you can do? Since they are not winners now the only way to do that is bring in young skilled guys who are hungry and want to learn and get playing time. Gee. That is what Babcock is doing.
I know this may not look like a significant signing but Babcock did good in signing Darrick Martin. Sure he does not play but he is a veteren in this league and played for the Clippers in their bad days. He knows the other players in this league and knows a thing about patience and perseverance when it comes to losing games. Between most breaks in action I see him giving advice to the younger players.
I look forward to them maturing and becoming winners. I don't think there is as much satisfaction buying a championship but earning it through growth and maturity.
To me Babcock is on his way to getting the job done.
