I'm still not sold on Hoffman either. Despite today's hold he wasn't that impressive. He was hit hard twice and gave up two hits. A few so so pitches that missed on location were missed by the hitters.

What about trying Varland as a closer with his 100mph fastball???
Varland was arguably a bit shittier than Hoffmann in August. (A bit higher ERA and a higher WHIP). But they were both really bad.

Varlands was protected in mid leverage in Minnesota, and has been really bad at high leverage in Toronto.

His breaking stuff is mid, and his fastball doesn’t get much swing and miss as it’s more based on sinking action. He will figure out I think, but not in 2025. He will be around for a while and I think he will be a very valuable piece in the next few years but not likely this year.

If we are going to replace Hoffman it has to be Dominquez before Varland.

Bigger issue beyond Hoffman is the entire high leverage arms in Bullpen have struggled (hoff, little, Rodriquez, Varland) and Dominquez has just been ok.

Makes finding alternatives to Hoffman difficult but we need to find one even if it’s just for the sale of change. But not sure if Schneider thinks the same.

Kiner-Falefa is back with the Jays. They claimed him off waivers from the Pirates. Poor Joey Loperfido.

Eric Lauer has been moved to the BP as Schneider has alluded to in the past, will go with 5 man rotation. It should be Berrios in my opinion.

I think we can safely eliminate Nance and Little as potential Hoffman replacements

---Ryan Yarborough reminds me a lot of Jimmy Key.
---Another awesome performance by Kevin Gausman.

If his "velocity isn't peaking where it did earlier in the season", is that a sign of fatigue. Too much pitching this year?
I would say so. Just like what Yariel Rodriguez is going through right now. Just like last season with a tired arm. But Rodriguez showed some velocity in his last outing. Maybe they borrowed something from the old locker of Roger Clemens lol.

Gausman is on fire right now. His only blemish was giving up that HR to Stanton on a 1-2 count. Not sure why he wasn't going up in the strike zone as Stanton is a good lowball hitter.
