What about trying Varland as a closer with his 100mph fastball???
Varland was arguably a bit shittier than Hoffmann in August. (A bit higher ERA and a higher WHIP). But they were both really bad.
Varlands was protected in mid leverage in Minnesota, and has been really bad at high leverage in Toronto.
His breaking stuff is mid, and his fastball doesn’t get much swing and miss as it’s more based on sinking action. He will figure out I think, but not in 2025. He will be around for a while and I think he will be a very valuable piece in the next few years but not likely this year.
If we are going to replace Hoffman it has to be Dominquez before Varland.
Bigger issue beyond Hoffman is the entire high leverage arms in Bullpen have struggled (hoff, little, Rodriquez, Varland) and Dominquez has just been ok.
Makes finding alternatives to Hoffman difficult but we need to find one even if it’s just for the sale of change. But not sure if Schneider thinks the same.
