It will be fascinating to see if Pedro still has his mojo working. If he comes up even semi-big, that'll cement him for the HoF - WS wins for 2 different teams in 2 different series!
Pedro reached guaranteed hall of fame status by the end of 2002. If he had voluntarily retired at that point, like a Sandy Koufax he still would have been a first ballot hall of famer. His peak dominance cemented him as not only a hall of famer, but an upper echelon hall of famer. He is one of the twenty greatest starting pitchers ever without a doubt. We have been lucky to see four of the greatest ever be great in the last fifteen years - Maddux, Clemens, Randy Johnson, and Pedro Martinez
His peak dominance over a seven year period from 1997-2003. is generally considered to be surpiassed by possibly only one other pitcher in the last 50 years. Sandy Koufax... and Sandy is considered one of the greatest pitchers ever. Sandy also has worst total career numbers then Pedro, as he struggled early in his career and he retired very early.
Adjusted ERA+ which is a good demonstrator of a dominant season. as it shows ERA compared to league averageand adjusted for ballpark, shows Pedro with five of the 33 most dominant season ever in that.
2000 - #2 Best Single Season All Time
1999 - #9
1997 - #18
2003 - #27
2002 - #33
Other ptichers with multiple seasons in the top 33 ever:
Walter Johnson - 4
Roger Clemens -3
Greg Maddux - 2
Christy Mathewson - 2
I realize I am bias, Pedro is one of my favourite players ever and I will attend his and Vladimir Guerrero's inductions into Cooperstown. But the stats show that he was one of the most dominant pitchers ever for a fairly long sustained period.
