Let me say ou are increasingly right about this. More workers will gradually be in this position as time goes by as well. Too bad it plays havoc with family schedules though.
Let me say, I'm almost speechless. Family time is a tough call these days.

So I'm just watching the news and it seems our strike is not over and the boys have been ordered back to the picket lines. Apparently they are pissed because the city plans to use a private company to haul away the trash over the long weekend thereby avoiding having to pay costly overtime wages. Of course the union wants at the overtime trough to let its worker recoupe their lost wages. Greedy greedy bastards. Why don't they just walk up to citizens, club them over the head and take their wallets. It will be more efficient and the city will smell better. It was kind of funny though watching Miller lose it a little bit with reporters. Even he seems frustrated with the union's greed.

Can you believe that CUPE 79, who have already ratified their agreement, won't report back to work until 416 has ratified theirs. This union mentality is just plain fucked up. I say if they don't report to work fire the lot of them.

It's time to break these public sector unions once and for all. What is the need for unions in the public sector, can anyone tell me?

They can't even go back to work without bitching. If they didn't like it, just vote no.

Many of them said They can live with the deal, they know they could have got a worse deal, but some brainless knats are making noises.

The guys I feel for are the non contract workers got screwed.

I just heard CUPE rep Ferguson speak on the tele. He could read a MacDonald's menu out loud and make it sound complicated. Geesshh! It took him twenty words or more to answer yes to a simple questions

These guys really want to get back to work before the holiday bad. It's so obvious it's a shame.

I was always told I had to work a set number of days to qualify for holiday pay. These guys haven't been working have they? Or this another example of contractual sweetheart deals.

They'll work Monday and get their overtime as per there contract. Thye'll clean up the city quickly
The quick work won't come from a sense of commitment. the government ministries guidelines say it has to be done in 24 hrs.

MB, are the picketers considered on the job while on strike? Therefore qualify for holiday pay as per the general guideline of needing to be on the job the last scheduled day before a stat holiday and work a set number of days to qualify for holiday pay.

I posted something similar in another thread but I will repost it here so others might see it.

Posters might want to email their councillors to get them to vote against this sweat heard deal. At the very least, the replies you get should indicate whether you should vote against them in the next election. If you don’t know who your councillor is, you can find it here by entering your address:

http://app.toronto.ca/wards/jsp/wards.jsp

The time it takes to send an email would be no longer than making a post here, but might be ever so slightly more effective than a post here.

My councillor is well grounded/trained and realistic, but his vote won't really matter.

Pavlov would be proud.

I just saw CUPE Fergeson addressing the strikers and repeating 'we won' and' solidarity' each time great cheers rose from the masses. They didn't win and there were many signs of disgruntled picketers, Bit even Stalin knew to repeat a lie enough times and people will believe it.

As to who wanted this strike, a picketer said he was told the agreed to details were basically the same ones on the table in March. You figure it out.

People have an absolute right to a union

This is recognized by the United Nations and now by the Canadian Constitution under the "Freedom of Association" clause the judges have said this means unions. Various businesses and governments have tried to break them but it will be increasingly difficult with these court decisions. BC Gov't tried to strip a number of provisions from BC gov't workers union, Supreme Court decision, you cannot do that.

May have to leave it to the lawyers on both sides.

You never get a solution until both sides have at least a fig leaf to cover their losses. Both sides need to declre a victory.

More work for lawyers, geesh!

Old Joke;

Three friends, a doctor, lawyer, and preist go out for a day of off Miami (of course).

The boat begins to sink and the friends have to tread water until help arrives. They notice that sharks were beginning to gather and decided to swim in the direction of the rescue boat. Eventually the lawyer reaches the boat but the doctor and priest were not so lucky.

When asked why he was spared, the lawyer shrugged his shoulder and mumbled, professional courtesy?

I got an auto-reply from my councillor saying that due to the strike their staff have been reassigned to other duties and as a result they won't be responding to email in a timely fashion.

How ironic.

So now what, phone them? I am betting I will get a voicemail telling me the same thing.

I'm guessing council votes are recorded. Can you find out how your councilor voted, albeit after the fact?
What time is the vote on Friday? Hmm. I work quite close to city hall.
